about
In 2021, still during the pandemic, we were awarded the Maria Alice Vergueiro Prize, Module I of the Emergency Aldir Blanc Law. This award was the foundation for our work that year.
The pedagogical workshop "The Sound and Its Sound", in a virtual format divided into 4 episodes, explores anthropophagic sonority based on the concept of Soundscape, proposed by composer R. Murray Schafer. Beyond theory, the workshop also encourages practical reflections on composing Soundscapes.

Workshop Episodes
EP. 1 - SOUNDSCAPE
Have you ever heard of a soundscape?
Those sounds we try to ignore but sometimes can't?
How often do you notice the avalanche of sounds that fill urban environments?
In this episode, Santa Cia. discusses the concept of soundscape and how sound influences our emotions and quality of life.
We honor Canadian composer and theorist Murray Schafer. Using listening tools, we propose expanding awareness of the effects of the sonic environment on daily life and music creation derived from abstract sounds.
EP. 2 - THE HUMAN VOICE
Do you struggle to talk in noisy places? Have you ever felt your voice tired just from speaking?
In this episode, Santa Cia. explores the uses of the human voice across different cultures and its impact on the soundscape. We also examine how urban soundscapes silence human voices, leading to stress and vocal strain.
This episode is dedicated to choir conductor Fábio Miguel and his doctoral thesis: "Soundscape: A Study of the Human Voice as a Sonic Symbol."
EP. 3 - EM CASA
Have you ever wanted to compose music but didn’t have instruments nearby?
Or never tried making music because you don’t play any instruments?
In this episode, Debora Predella and Ana Cruse spark creativity by proposing musical arrangements using everyday sounds. They introduce the concept of "cotidiophones" through exercises and musical examples, blending sounds from violins, lighters, glasses, and a typewriter.
EP. 4 - EDITING
Have you ever wanted to compose music but found audio editing software difficult?
In the fourth episode of "The Sound and Its Sound", Claudio Mascaro demonstrates the entire process of musical construction—from recording to editing and production in a DAW (Digital Audio Workstation). He covers a brief history of recording techniques and introduces a free online tool for audio production.
EP. 5 - IN SANTA COMPANHIA
Do you know Santa Cia.'s sonic environment?
In the fifth and final episode of "The Sound and Its Sound", Santa Cia. offers an artistic journey through recordings made at Casa Livre, Barra Funda – São Paulo. This episode documents the resulting sonic experiences and the space where they happened.
